Public Transport evaluates the availability and quality of related facilities and services in each Swiss commune.

A high score for Public Transport means excellent public transit access (bus, train, tram). Conversely, a low score indicates limited public transport connections. This criterion is measured using official Swiss data (FSO, geo.admin.ch) and open data (OpenStreetMap).

The Public Transport criterion is particularly important for young professionals (weight: 95%) and families (60%). nature lovers place less emphasis on it (20%), prioritizing other criteria.

This criterion in depth

Public transport accessibility is exceptionally well-measured in Switzerland thanks to the public-transport quality classes (A to D) defined by the Federal Office for Spatial Development (ARE). Each stop is rated by service frequency and mode type (train, tram, metro, bus), then projected into pedestrian-isochrone rings around stops to reflect real on-foot accessibility. A high score indicates dense service — a train or tram within 300 m running every five minutes (class A), or a bus within 150 m every half hour (class C). Swiss public transport is among the most heavily used per capita in Europe. The Swiss Mobility Microcensus 2021 reports that around 24% of kilometres travelled are by public transport — versus 13% on the European average. The reasons: an integrated clock-face timetable, nationally synchronised scheduling to the minute, and sustained infrastructure investment (Rail 2000, AlpTransit, CEVA). The network serves 97% of communes and allows travellers to reach a cantonal centre from any station with at most two transfers.

Good service radically changes household finances. For a car-free couple, the annual cost of a Swiss half-fare card or general travelcard remains below the ownership cost of a single vehicle (insurance, vignette, depreciation, parking). Seniors and young adults without a driving licence gain near-complete mobility autonomy in class-A or class-B communes. Conversely, a class-D or class-E commune requires vehicle ownership — a monthly overhead of CHF 600 to 1,200 depending on usage patterns.

VivaMap's transport score captures the public-transport service classes but does not include cycling-network quality or emerging mobility (bike-share, e-scooter). These dimensions are not yet covered by a nationally granular dataset. Their future integration could meaningfully shift scores for communes that compensate modest PT coverage with excellent cycling infrastructure (certain communes in Basel, Bern, or Zurich).

Well-served communes often correlate locally with a lower noise score — stations generate mechanical noise — and a higher property price. The interplay between these dimensions is worth examining on the interactive map before finalising a residential choice.

For workers commuting daily between an agglomeration-fringe commune and a city centre, the difference between a class-B and class-D service can amount to one hour of travel per day — around 250 hours per year. At CHF 50 per hour, that time value represents CHF 12,500 annually, a figure rarely factored explicitly into purchase decisions, but one that compounds to several hundred thousand francs over a 20-year ownership horizon.

Switzerland in European context

Switzerland has one of the densest rail networks per square kilometre in Europe: over 5,300 km of tracks across 41,285 km² — a density nearly three times that of France and twice that of Germany. Half-hourly service on the core network, with quarter-hourly frequency on major corridors, well exceeds European averages. Only the Netherlands and parts of Austria match this frequency.

On open data, the Netherlands publishes GTFS timetable data continuously via NDOV, enabling real-time accessibility calculations. Germany has built the DELFI register (Deutschlandweite Fahrgastinformationen) as a centralised timetable source, though data quality varies by Verkehrsverbund. France operates transport.data.gouv.fr, but inter-urban network coverage remains patchy. In Switzerland, SBB's IS-EVU data and the federal service-class datasets are among the most structured in Europe, making PT accessibility modelling particularly reliable. For communes in cross-border agglomerations (Geneva–Annemasse, Basel–Mulhouse, Constance), the VivaMap score reflects only the Swiss network — a factor to consider if daily mobility crosses the border.

Impact on Real Estate

Proximity to public transport is one of the best-documented price drivers in the Swiss real-estate market. Hedonic studies from Switzerland and Europe estimate a premium of 3 to 10% for dwellings within 400 m of a railway station, depending on service frequency and connectivity to employment centres. On an apartment priced at CHF 800,000 in the Zurich agglomeration, this premium can represent CHF 25,000 to 80,000 depending on the distance to the nearest station.

The price effect is particularly pronounced around SBB stations on the Zurich–Winterthur, Lausanne–Geneva, and Bern–Biel corridors, where household surveys show that 60 to 70% of residents commute by train daily. In Zurich, transaction data from 2019–2023 indicate that apartments within a 5-minute walk of an S-Bahn stop consistently sell for 6 to 9% more than comparable properties 15–20 minutes away. Eliminating a household vehicle (saving CHF 10,000 to 18,000 per year) is a direct financial argument that justifies this purchase premium over a 10-year horizon. How to Read This Score

On VivaMap's 0–10 scale, here is how to read the transport score:

  • 8–10 — exceptional coverage. SBB station or tram stop within 300 m with at least 15-minute frequencies (service classes A/B+). Core zones of the Zurich, Geneva, Basel, Bern, Lausanne agglomerations. Full commuting without a car is entirely practical.
  • 6–8 — good coverage. Bus or tram every 15 to 30 minutes, rail station 5–10 minutes on foot. First-ring peri-urban communes of major agglomerations. Car-free living achievable with modest habit adjustment.
  • 4–6 — adequate coverage; buses every 30–60 minutes. Transfers needed to reach regional centres. A car remains useful outside scheduled hours.
  • 2–4 — limited coverage, often 2 to 4 postbus runs per day. Semi-rural communes where a car is near-indispensable. Some SBB stations 10–20 driving minutes away.
  • 0–2 — very weak or no coverage. Rural or alpine communes. Reaching the nearest PT stop requires a 30-minute walk or more. Two-vehicle households recommended for working-age residents.

Cross-reference the transport score with the noise score: in agglomerations the two are often negatively correlated. An 8/10 transport score with a 4/10 noise score in a Zurich core zone represents a different trade-off from a 6/10 transport with a 7/10 noise in a quiet commuter commune.
